EIA 232

Introduction about EIA 232 interface standard

The EIA-232 interface standard specifies the method connection of two devices- the DTE and DCE. DTE refers to data terminal equipment, for example, a computer or a printer. A DTE device communicates with equipment such as a modem. DCE equipment is now also called data circuit terminating equipment in EIA/TIA-232E. A DCE device receives data from the DTE and retransmits to another DCE device via a data communication link such as a telephone link.

The major element of EIA-232

The EIA-232 standard consists of three major parts, which defines:
1. Electrical signal characteristics
2. Mechanical characteristics of interface
3. Functional description of interchange circuits
